This Is How Janmashtami Is Celebrated In Hyderabad

In the olden days, grandmother and grandfather used to tell us about the reasons behind our traditions and culture. But now elders and children are so engaged with life that they don't have time to explain the importance of rituals and festivals because of work pressure. But we are not supposed to leave this situation in this way. It is our responsibility to teach kids to learn why every festival is being celebrated and what is the importance of traditions and culture. So, here is a glimpse of Janmashtami.

On a scary night of Ashtami, Lord Shri Krishna was born in Mathura. That is the reason why Lord Krishna's birthday is named “Shri Krishna Janmashtami” as he was born on the Ashtami of Bhadrapada which falls in August- September. So, there is no predetermined date for Janmashtami. The Ashtami of Bhadrapada month is considered as Shri Krishna Janmashtami and is celebrated accordingly in different states and counties.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami is also called as Gokulashtami, Saatamastami, Srikrishna Jayanthi in different states and countries. But in the end, all the names are having the same meaning.

Darkest Night turned Into An Auspicious Morning

Among the thunder rains, scary midnight, Kansa's evil thoughts, a hope was born on the Ashtami day of Bhadrapada month in Mathura. And the hope is Lord Shri Krishna, where Krishna was believed as the eighth incarnation of the great Shri Vishnu.

Vasudev and Devaki gave birth to Shri Krishna. But Krishna was raised by Yashoda and Nanda Gopal in Vrindavan to save Krishna from Kansa.

King Kansa was the ruler of Mathura and Devaki was Kansa’s sister.

Kansa was a very cruel and harsh king, where the people of Mathura were frightened of him. Many people suffered and bothered with Kansa’s evil thoughts and decisions. No person had the guts to fight against Kansa. This was continued for many years.

At the time of Devaki’s marriage, it was predicted that Devaki’s 8th son would be the cause of Kansa’s death. Before the birth of Lord Krishna, Devaki gave birth to seven sons. Now it’s time for the 8th one, the one who is supposed for Kansa’s death. Kansa knew about this before itself. That is the reason he wants to kill the 8th child of Devaki. Also, Kansa has killed all the children of Devaki who was born before Krishna. Now, he wants the 8th child to be killed by him.

Devaki and Vasudev have come to know about the cruel decision of Kansa. Later, Kansa confined both Vasudev and Devaki in a prison. Then at the midnight of Ashtami, Lord Krishna was born in the prison. His birth gave new hope to people, a new light to the Matura, and an end to Kansa.

To save newborn Krishna from Kansa, Vasudev traveled to Vrindavan. Vrindavan is the place where Nanda Gopal and Yashoda stay. After reaching Vrindavan, Vasudev handed over the responsibility of little Krishna to Yashoda and Nanda. At the same time, Yashoda gave birth to a baby girl who was exchanged in the place of Lord Krishna and then handed the child to Kansa. When Kansa tried to kill the baby girl, the girl turned to Goddess Durga and warned Kansa for his imminent fate. After Devaki, Yashoda was said to be the mother of Krishna, as she took the responsibilities when he was born and handed over to her by Vasudev.

Hyderabad’s Way Of Celebrating Janmashtami

Many rituals are followed by different states. Rituals like Dahi Handi, keeping footprints with rangoli as a belief that little Krishna will enter into the home, performing pooja and fast on an auspicious day.

In Hyderabad, Janmashtami is celebrated by following rituals like performing fast, performing pooja by adoring the Krishna idol. Also, in addition to this Dahi Handi ( also called Utlotsavam or Uttu in Hyderabad) is observed. Utlotsavam is all about hanging a pot filled with coins to some height of rope and is broken by people. The coins are awarded to the group of people who breaks it. Bhajan’s in the name of Krishna is also performed at night of Janmashtami.

Let’s make ourselves part of teaching the importance of festivals to children and also for future generations.
